Giving someone a job is never easy. There are potential pitfalls in every segment of the employment process. SMEs should think very seriously about hiring employees as employees are one of the most critical segments of their business.
The most critical stage is defining what sort of person you want and then planning to hire such a person. People are very important to a business. Some businesses spend considerable amounts of time and energy in selecting and appraising new equipment before placing an order and yet show scant regard to that other very important asset in every business – the human asset.
A business cannot survive on fixed assets alone. It needs another very important resource – people. People who drive those other resources. If you don’t get that right, your business will probably fail. When you hire staff, any staff, it should be to a plan as part of a significant contribution to the overall success of the business.
